Maia, Mama, and Obaa

Maia shared her "almost 5" birthday with our class!

Today, Maia invited her Obaa and Mother who spoke of their  beautiful Japanese birthday traditions.  Mom showed an intricately designed silk kimono made by Obaa and decorative shoes (with bells attached) worn on Maia's 1st birthday and told of how Maia was a gracious hostess even at her 1st birthday party.  Obaa explained how traditionally, several items are placed  before a child i.e. musical instruments, an abacus,  and art materials to watch what a child might have a propensity toward (of course Maia chose the latter).  Obaa also explained that the bells attached to the shoes and kimono are used to locate the very busy one year old:)  Mom further explained that the kimono was fastened with several colorful sashes and an ornate bow on the back.    Obaa  taught us a song about  body parts (how appropriate for  our "Human Body" unit.)  We also counted to 10 in Japanese.  Lastly, we celebrated Maia's birthday with singing, purple "M" cookies, and a delicious fruit basket.  Thank you Maia and family for sharing such a special Friday with us!   You are still a gracious birthday hostess!

The paper used for storing the kimono was just as intricate as the garment itself!
